A Glittery Faux Mosaic Card

Do you like dots? I like dots. It’s a classic pattern on home decor, clothing, paper… you name it. I needed to make a congratulations card today for a younger friend of mine since she received a promotion at work. Pretty sweet, right? But the usual “congrats” sentiment didn’t really suit the recipient - I had to pick out something a little cooler for her.

So, I decided on a faux mosaic-style card. To make a card like this, all you need is a bunch of same-shape punches in different sizes. You can use any shape you have: hearts, stars, squares, etc. I chose to go with circles because I have a lot of sizes to pick from. The punched paper pieces will be your "tiles." I even threw a hole punch in there 😃

This technique works best if you use a thicker textured paper to work on. I’ll explain why in just a bit. So to start out, I die cut a piece of Royal Sundance 110lb Felt cardstock in Brilliant White with a dotted frame die (Double Pierced Rectangles, Avery Elle).

You’ll want to find some glittery cardstock to make the main pattern in your layout. I used Mirrisparkle Glitter cardstock in Silver for my design and punched out a few of each circle size. Next, I figured out how I wanted the glittery "tiles" to look and began sticking them down. I went from bottom left to top right.

Here’s the fun part of this - adhering the circles one by one can be super tedious, but if you have a Xyron Sticker Maker or some double sided adhesive sheets, sticking down all your pieces is a breeze!

Once you have the main "tiles" in place, fill in around them with dots punched from colored papers. I used Basis 80lb cardstock in Aqua and Teal and alternated the colors as I was filling in the white areas. Don’t forget you can cut some of them in half to fill in any pesky corners or edges.

Once you have the mosaic design done, run the whole panel through a die cutting machine with the plates only. This will press your "tiles" into the thicker white cardstock (and that's why I needed the Royal Sundance paper!). Use a 4 x 5.25-inch piece of Basis Black cardstock to mat your artwork, then mount it onto your A2-sized card base.

To finish up the card, I added my sentiment (Best Day Ever Die, Simon Says Stamp) with a little glue and coated it with some Nuvo Crystal Glaze.

Note: To make your faux mosaic pieces look even more like glass pieces, coat each of them carefully with Crystal Glaze and let dry completely before adding your sentiment.

Thanks for dropping by to check out the card for today! If you have any questions, feel free to ask them in the comment section below - I’d be happy to help!
